Yep, hands up, this is not the best condition vinyl, but it was a pound at the boot fair and its a corker! On the Romanian state label Electrecord Records, as mentioned in our previous post with Ádám Erzsébet.
Ciocârlia means ‘lark’ (the bird). There’s a famous Romanian folk song of the same name. It’s the fourth song on the second side. Anyone who knows Taraf De Haidouks , or many of the other amazing folk groups from Romania will recognise it. It’s also popular with lots of other folk groups connected to Eastern Europe, I’ve heard it played by quite a few Romani violinists over the years.
The copy is on from the first time the record was released, around 1965, with the catalogue number EPE 0219. It was reissued many times with slightly different track listings and different singers. I'm not sure if the record was originally released in the UK, but text is in English for some reason. Anyway, hopefully you’ll enjoy, crackles and all!
Coming soon; more vintage vinyl from Azerbaijan and a collection of Sevdah 7 inches.
