Another one with little info, this one from a second hand shop in Istanbul; some beautiful music from Azerbaijan, on the Soviet state owned label Melodiya (founded in 1964.) Some of the archive recordings from the label are available via Naxos, but these are mostly Classical music recordings. There is still a Russian website for Melodiya, which seems to be mostly a huge back catalogue of archive recordings and a few new releases. It’s still state owned label, so make your own moral decisions about buying from it.
Many countries that were aligned to the Soviet Union post 1945 had state run labels that released some excellent folk music recordings, which were in part at least used to promote ideals of strong national identities through folk music. They were also of course often oppressive regimes. The vinyl from the various labels can be found in second hand shops in many East European countries, I picked some up on our summer holiday to Romania. The guy in the shop had some in his sale box and seemed bemused that anyone would want to buy it, but it’s rarely seen in the UK. One persons rubbish is another’s treasure etc’.
The little info I can find on these, is via Google Translate, they’re Muğams, an Azerbaijani art form of poetry and classical music improvisations on particular music modes. The recording was made in 1990, and is credited to “Trio named after Jabbar Garyaghdioglu” There’s a wikipedia page for Jabbar Garyaghdioglu, stating he was a prominent Azerbaijani folk singer and composer who lived from 1861 - 1944.
