To date there are at least 16000 children who have been killed by Israeli military, since the retaliatory attacks on Gaza. Many more are thought to be buried under rubble. As part of an ongoing project, community groups in Brighton have made ribbons with the names of the children. So far there are 4000.
People walked in silence through the streets from the Hove Peace statue, to Pavilion gardens, as the names of some of the children were read out loud along the way. In over two hours walking, starting with those under one year old, by the time we reached Pavilion gardens, names were of two year olds. Some one else in the park was reading names of older children.
There was a small counter demonstration near the start, as usual falsely accusing those marching for Palestine of being antisemitic and supporters of terrorist groups. Along the march route the vast majority of people watched respectfully, some took pictures, some joined the march. There were a couple of minor incidents, one man shouting verbal abuse at people as they walked.
The solemn vigil ended in Pavilion gardens with speeches and community choir.
The UK Government, firstly under the Conservatives, now Labour, continues to supply arms to Israel.
